Our Communities

Since its inception, Calypso Uranium has committed itself to being a good neighbour in the communities where we are present. Through our employees, our efforts are aimed at building relationships with local people, institutions, organizations and regional representatives to develop broad community support. With regular community engagement, the Company demonstrates a deep appreciation for the local environment in which we operate and promotes a two-way communication flow to promote the sustainable development of our projects.

In Argentina, through our subsidiary Energía Mineral (Inc.) S.A., the Company makes every effort to procure goods and services not only in Argentina but particularly from the local communities where we are active, thereby contributing to local economic growth and employment.

In the Province of Mendoza, Energía Mineral is a member of the Mendoza Chamber of Mining Companies (Cámara Mendocina de Empresarios Mineros, CaMEM) and active in its information and community engagement efforts. Among various activities, the company organized the December 2007 seminar on Sustainable Development sponsored by the Mendoza Economic Federation (FEM); and sponsored a course on "Mining for Non-Miners" offered by FUNDAMIN (Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Minería Argentina) in Mendoza in May 2008.

In the Malargüe area of Mendoza, Energía Mineral initiated the cooperative arrangement between CaMEM and the local Mining Advisory Council, in which it is an active member. Throughout 2007 and 2008, the Company offered regular presentations open to the community of Malargüe on issues related to mining and to radiological safety. Energía Mineral is a strong supporter of Malargue's Mining Technical School (Escuela 4-018 "Manuel Nicolás Savio" Técnica, Química y Minera), a mining technician high school where the company has presented classes on satellite navigation (GPS) use and radiation safety. In 2007, Energía Mineral supported the national gathering of all mining technician high schools in Argentina. We also support educational tourism in the region, including by commissioning a geological mural for the future natural science museum and supporting the development of a paleontological park where visitors can tour actual dinosaur footprints.

In Neuquén Province, Energía Mineral continues to deepen community interaction efforts including through strengthening the education and science sectors. The company selected the National University of Comahue's Zapala Campus Degree program for Mining Technology together with the National University of San Luis for the preparation of its environmental impact reports in the province. Energía Mineral was a sponsor of the III Latin American Congress of Vertebrate Paleontology, in Neuquén in September 2008.

National and International Engagement

Energía Mineral is a founding member of CADEU (Cámara Argentina de Empresas de Uranio, the Argentine Chamber of uranium companies); member of FUNDAMIN; and member of the Argentine-Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Several members of the Energía Mineral team belong to the Argentine Association for Nuclear Technology (AATN; Asociación Argentino de Tecnología Nuclear).

Energía Mineral was the only private sector sponsor of the October 2006 IAEA and Argentine National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) Technical Meeting in Mendoza on "Uranium Exploration, Mining, Production, Mine Remediation and Environmental Issues". In 2005, Roney Long, President of Calypso Uranium and of Energía Mineral, was the only private sector employee ever to be sponsored by Argentina as a representative at the annual IAEA Symposium in Vienna, Austria.

Health and Safety

Because uranium is a naturally radioactive element just as it lies in the earth and as such is judged to present no risk to human health, few norms worldwide regulate radiation protection in uranium exploration and none in Argentina. Despite this, in keeping with our "best practice" approach to mining, Energía Mineral has created and adopted the most modern and complete radiological safety program governing uranium exploration in Argentina, the "Radiological Safety and Protection Guide for Uranium Exploration".

In addition to complying with all Argentinean occupational health and safety laws and norms regarding radiation protection, the company has adopted both the international risk principle of "As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)" as well as Health Canada's "Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)" with respect to radiation safety in all stages of our work. All employees, contractors and service providers are required to read and adhere to the guidelines, and the Company's geophysicist regularly monitors employees, contractors, and select individuals or sites with the company's dosimeters. In the community, people living in the company's exploration areas are also included in the monitoring program.

Our "Radiological Safety and Protection Guide for Uranium Exploration" has been shared with the national nuclear regulatory authority (ARN), the national atomic energy commission (CNEA), communities and assay laboratories. The complete guide and focussed sub-guides for employees, contractors and the communities are available in Spanish on our website, all updated in April 2008.

Environment

As a group who study the earth and its elements more closely than any other and are respectful of the area in which they work, Energía Mineral's exploration geologists are natural "environmentalists". To promote transparency and to build awareness and public understanding of uranium exploration, all the Company's environmental impact assessment reports are posted publicly on our website (available by individual project under"Projects").
